Current Federal regulations are a recipe for organ donation and transplant failure.

Policy Alignment

Science in Donation and Transplant is a non-profit established in November 2020 devoted to improving OPO's performance using the proper metrics to evaluate their performance. Donors and transplant recipients alike deserve a well-aligned, science-based system. Current regulations judge OPO's equally on donations, which they control, and transplants, which they do not.

We advocate in concert with leading medical practitioners for enhanced coordination and alignment among organ procurement organizations and transplant centers. That is the answer.

Recognized scientists and community stakeholders in organ donation and transplant should lead a National Task Force using a peer-reviewed scientific methodology approach to provide the sound data to develop the necessary metrics for implementing an improved system.  This would be a welcome change from what others offered to CMS during the development of the regulations.

Our goal is to ensure that the metrics and measures used to credential, license, designate and certify donation and transplant organizations are grounded in science and protected from political whim and private financial influence.

SID&T and Leading Transplant Experts Agree

Since its 2020 launch, Science and Donation and Transplant (SID&T) has advocated for several reforms to improve the current organ donation and transplant system in its entirety, not just a small part of it.

Many of these, including executing efforts to better align the efforts of medical staff, patients, transplant centers, and advocacy organizations, are included in the accompanying letter.

By involving all stakeholders in the design, and capitalizing / expanding the available framework for improving the system collaboratively, system performance and quality through a detailed implementation plan will increase.
